Speaking in support of heritage-listing West End, Fremantle

“Both our families have deep roots in Fremantle – Freo has been good to us!

I am excited by this period of re-invigoration that Fremantle seems to be going
through and I definitely see a role for West End in that bigger picture.

Having the West End formally recognised as an intact gold-boom precinct will
sharpen its point of difference and allow it to be developed and marketed more effectively.”

“I am passionate about heritage, but I am also a businessman.

For me, it was a simple equation – heritage is good for business.

I run booked-out meal and tour packages of the National Hotel for groups of
up to 30 people, who are all keen to soak up the history and ambiance of the building and hear about its restoration.

Heritage has given me a business advantage - with the National Hotel, I have a
unique asset in the building and the stories that visitors are keen to be a part of.”

“I decided to open my coffee bar in West End because it is one of the focal points
of Fremantle’s rich heritage.

There is a real sense of culture and history here, which is evident from the craftsmanship and the joyous details in the heritage buildings.

The heritage-listing of West End has the potential to bring significant economic benefits to the local businesses. As it is, many of my customers include tourists and visitors who wander around, enjoying a taste of the history of the area.”

“I chose to live in the West End of Fremantle back in the 1970s because it seemed the most urban part of Western Australia.  It was a place with a mix of uses and ethnic groups, and real vitality on the streets.

I’m still living there and believe that including the West End in the State Register will help protect its unique qualities and heritage.

However, in our efforts to protect the precinct’s heritage values, it is important that the West End is not regarded as a ‘museum piece’. For the precinct to thrive, there must be vibrant mixed-use and good contemporary development working sensitively with the heritage buildings.

The West End has the potential to be the highlight of a visit to Western Australia.”
