Marsala House, Dianella (1976)
Watch the Channel Nine story on Marsala House.
Affectionately known as “Dianella’s Disco House”, Marsala House is one of the youngest residences on the State Register of Heritage Places.
Built in 1976 for the Marsala family, it pushed the boundaries of contemporary residential design through the inventiveness of its concrete block work design. Its interior reflected the groovy 1970s style, including a Las Vegas inspired disco floor.
The place is one of the finest residences designed by highly-regarded WA architect Iwan Iwanoff, clearly demonstrating his idiosyncratic explorations in the Late Twentieth Century Brutalist style.
By 2006, the house had fallen into disrepair, suffering from serious structural issues including concrete cancer.
The new owners undertook major restoration work including restoring the 1970s interior, earning them the 2011 WA Heritage Award for residential conservation.
“There is a richness to the brutalist style,” said one of the owners. “The way the light plays on it and the texture that is revealed in the harsh Australian sun that makes this house so special to live in.”
